About Derek Bird

Welcome to Derek's icons gallery!

Derek Bird grew up in the North East of England, has always been interested in painting and is largely self-taught. He studied medicine at St George’s Hospital, London and now lives in Harpenden. He first became fascinated by the beauty of icons whilst on holiday in Cyprus in 1992. Since then he has studied the canons, or rules, which govern how they are painted. He has received commissions to paint icons for churches and for private collections and has given lectures about iconography.
 
 All icons painted by Derek Bird can be commissioned in different sizes and prices will be made available on request.
 
 People may also request particular icons that are personal to them that are not actually on display.
