The Baptism of Christ
Derek Bird Religious Icon:
The Baptism of Christ
Galicia, 17th century
In this icon we see the weak and vulnerable figure of Christ being baptised in the Jordan. The tall, strong and saintly figure of John is almost out of proportion to the rest of the painting but is balanced by the three angels on the other side. As John blesses Jesus he looks upwards to see the Holy Spirit descending like a dove. He hears the words of God “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” On our right the heavenly host look on in approval.
In the background the mountains remind us of the psalm “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh even from the Lord which made heaven and earth.”
Around Jesus is the blue water of the Jordan as it passes through the gorge. It appears to be like a mandorla and the blue colour also represents the divine love of God.
Jesus looks as though his head is pressed down by the weight of John’s hand, perhaps recognising the enormity of the task before him. His right hand blesses us as we too are included in this special moment.
