Marcus Carter
Venetian backwater

Venetian backwater
It was my first visit to Venice. I arrived at the Piazza San Marco by ferry and saw, under a bright sun, all the buildings that before I had only ever seen as paintings or photographs. After days of exploring I found myself increasingly drawn not to the splendid baroque frontages but to the minor canals and the quiet backwaters.
This painting, in gouache, was the first of several on that subject.
